Gallery De Novo

Gallery De Novo opened in 2005 and quickly established itself as one of Dunedin’s leading galleries, hosting an exciting and eclectic mix of New Zealand contemporary artists. In addition to hosting exhibitions, they stock a range of limited-edition artwork and reproduction prints by some of their most popular artists. They also have a full-service framing workshop which specialises in quality conservation and custom picture framing.

Gallery De Novo are long-standing Turboweb clients and the time had come for a website revamp. Gallery De Novo wanted a fresher, better way of displaying their exhibitions and artists, a way for people to order gift vouchers, and a simple-to-use online shop to make life easier for their customers, anywhere in the world. It was also the ideal opportunity to upgrade the site to be more mobile friendly and usable on a wide range of devices

Turboweb created an online store for Gallery De Novo’s website. The store module is used for their limited-edition prints, which are able to be ordered directly online. The available artists are displayed in an attractive grid layout, with the full artworks displaying when you click the artist. Customers can add and remove items in their online cart before checking out, and payments are handled through Stripe, meaning that the whole transaction is safe and secure.

Gallery De Novo gift vouchers can be ordered directly online from a link on the home page. Turboweb created a custom vouchers module for these, where customers can fill in all the details that they want on the voucher and, once payment has been made, the voucher is directly emailed to the recipient’s email. Customers can either send the gift voucher to themselves, or directly to their friend or family member. A record is kept of all the vouchers that have been issued, and Gallery De Novo can keep track of which vouchers have been presented in the admin area of the website, through Simple Web Manager.

The artists module is used by Gallery De Novo to list the full catalogues of their exhibiting artists, and the original art that they have for sale. The artists module is searchable by artist’s name, so the module allows the addition of a large number of artists without getting unwieldy.

The exhibitions module was also custom built by Turboweb. This enables Gallery De Novo to upload all the exhibition details and images, and people can download an exhibition catalogue directly from the website. The Exhibitions module displays the exhibition banners as full width across the page, so that it is clear which exhibition is currently running at the gallery, with previous exhibitions being displayed below as people scroll down.

As the website for an art gallery, the aim of the Gallery De Novo site is to really let the artworks speak for themselves. The use of clear space, clean design lines and a black and white colour palette means that any artwork can be featured and displayed without worrying about a colour clash or design mismatch. The font of the site was selected to work well with their existing logo. The overall effect is a light and crisp site which invites visitors to explore what Gallery De Novo has to offer.
