Software as a Service for your small business - 6th May 2016

Not only does Turboweb believe in making the process of getting a website simple, we also believe in ensuring our office and projects run simply too. Enter the world of Software as a Service (SaaS).

Sometimes that can be easier said than done and as often happens, you go hunting for a tool to help you, only to end up spending hours if not days researching, reading, researching again and talking to your team, before implementing your chosen SaaS into every-day business.

So you might be asking, what SaaS does Turboweb believe is worth investing time and energy in to? Well you’re just in luck.

Slack

A recent addition to Turboweb’s SaaS artillery, Slack brings all your communication together in one place. Ultimately, Slack is an instant messaging system which allows you to collaborate with your team, suppliers, contractors and anyone else you speak to and email on a regular basis.

Slack allows you to set up channels, allowing you to separate messages and discussions by purpose, department / team or topic. Private channels can also be setup which are invite-only so no one else can see or join your private conversations.

Turboweb use Slack as a form of general communication between our team, and it’s not just for work purposes - YouTube clips and general ‘water cooler’ chat also has its own channel!

The best things about Slack:
  • It’s free! (for small business anyway)
  • Slack integrates with over 60 partners, many of which we know other small businesses use every day e.g. MailChimp, Trello and Google Calendar and Drive.

Trello

For small or large business owners who need to keep track of all the projects and tasks associated with each project, Trello is the perfect solution. Trello’s boards, lists, and cards enable you to organise and prioritise your projects in a fun, flexible and rewarding way all while working collaboratively with the rest of your team.

Trello is simple on the surface, but cards have everything you need to get stuff done. It allows you to upload files from your computer, Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, and OneDrive and add checklists, labels, due dates, and more.

Turboweb would be lost without Trello. For us, Trello is key to keeping our projects on track and holding the main information in a centralised point that all team members can access, including contractors.

The best things about Trello:
  • Just like Slack, Trello is free. If you need more tools, you can upgrade to Business Class for extra features.
  • Lists – everyone loves a good checklist!
  • They have a spokes-husky called Taco who offers you handy tips

Xero

Everyone knows managing the finances of a business can be stressful and without the proper management, accounts can get out of hand quickly. Odds are if you haven’t heard of Xero, you have been living under a rock for the past few years.

Xero has a powerful set of features that enable you to manage your money better as well as allowing you and your accountant to work together. With the simple dashboard, you can see how much money is coming in, how much money is going out and what money is in your accounts.

If you’re a Turboweb client you will probably know that we use Xero for our invoicing. As one of the first businesses in Dunedin to use Xero way back in 2006, we know it inside out. Xero also integrates easily with many other SaaS tools including Vend and Shopify. Turboweb have created systems for our clients that read and write information in Xero to auto generate invoices, list overdue accounts or update contacts.

The best things about Xero:
  • Easily reconcile your bank’s records and Xero’s records to ensure they are up to date
  • Xero are constantly releasing new features and asking for your opinion on what you want to see next
  • It’s a New Zealand company with the head office in Wellington
