New version of the Simple Content Manager Released - 17th Feb 2011

We're pleased to announce that we have just released a major update of our Simple Content Manager platform and all of our clients are now enjoying the benefits of this, free of charge.  This update has been on the boil for the last six months.

New Themes

We've added four new website themes to the theme gallery, bringing the total number of themes you can choose for your website to 42.  We also support custom themes (many of our clients have these) to add more flair to your website.  The new themes are clean and colourful and are available in the SCM admin panel.

Changes to Product Option Sets

We've changed the way that product option sets work in SCM.  An option set is used in the store part of the website where you have a single item that comes in many sizes (for example).  You can create an option set with these sizes, and then apply it to any item in your store.  The change we have made allows you to apply an option set to an item, but then you can customise the option set for that item only.

This means that it is now very simple to sell a product on your website where the medium size is not available (for example) simply by removing that option from the product.

Social Sharing Icons

As covered in Paul's previous news item about social sharing icons, you can now have sharing icons enabled for your website.  This is a great way to allow your visitors to share information with their friends on their social networks (e.g. Facebook, Twitter etc)

SCM Admin Icons

We've made some changes to the SCM admin panel to make it more consistent.  The settings section of the website is now much easier to work with.  We replaced a bunch of text links with nice icons showing you at a glance what they do.  Just log into your SCM admin and click on the Settings tab to see this in action.

Admin Feedback Form

We make SCM better by listening to you and to help you get in touch, we've added a "Feedback" tab on the left side of the SCM admin.  If there's anything you find annoying, odd, interesting or awesome, just click the feedback tab and tell us what you think.

Mailing List Administration

Some of you have grown your mailing lists to amazing sizes!  We have clients with over 1000 subscribers to their email list - this is a very powerful way to market your business.  With that many subscribers on your list we realised that the method we used to manage the mailing list was inadequate and so we've optimised this so that you can quickly edit and remove users on your mailing list.

Previewing changes before you publish them

You can now preview any news item or page even if it's not published.  This is a great way to see what it looks like without having to publish it on your website.  To preview a page or news item, go into the appropriate area and click the Preview icon beside the Edit icon - a popup box will show with what your content is going to look like.  When you're happy with it, simply publish the item and away you go.

Image Layout - Vertical Cascade

Images are a powerful addition to any website and we've added another image layout type called "Vertical Cascade".  When you use this, the images that you have uploaded for the page (or news item, or store product etc) will run down the right hand side of the content.  We are very conscious of the fact that our users want to be able to display lots of images and we have to allow this in a way that doesn't compromise the layout of their website.  We think this is a great approach to that problem.

To use this feature, simply edit the item that you want to change and click on the "Click to add or change" link beside the images, then you can change the image layout type to "Vertical Cascade".  Other image layout types are single image, thumbnails or 5 second fade.

What's Next?

We've got some good ideas of what we're doing next with the Simple Content Manager so watch this space.  Of course if you have suggestions then please go ahead and drop us a line.
